Auto Mechanics and CrossFit Gyms
As the adage goes, time is the only resource you can’t get more of. 24 hours is 24 hours. Every day we must make a decision as to how we are going to allocate that time: family, work, friends, eating, exercise, commute times, and sleep generally make our priority list.
While we can’t get more time, there are two important elements of time that are in our control:
1) Using our time efficiently
2) Extending the amount of time we have
When the check engine light comes on in my car, I take it to the shop. I don’t stop what I am doing and enroll in the nearest engineering program hoping that 2-3 years down the road I will be able to determine the source of my car’s failures. Doing so would have two major impacts on my life:
1) It would drastically extend the amount of time my car is operating with a serious ailment (potentially leading to more problems – the compounding effect) and
2) It would take away time that I could be spending with my family, becoming an expert in my given area of work, or getting the ever-elusive last couple hours of sleep every night.
We can look at fitness in the same way. Rather than spending time and energy trying to find the “perfect program”, bored out of your mind on a treadmill, or not knowing where to start (and therefore never prioritizing my physical health), find a gym where experts in their field teach you how to workout in the most efficient and effective way possible.
In the car analogy, working out by yourself (without instruction) often leads you to operate sub-maximally and inefficiently. This can magnify existing injuries, compound physical limitations, and develop long term chronic pain from performing exercises in a dangerous way.
If you do take the vast amount of time and training required to learn the intricacies of body mechanics, energy systems, physiology, and programming, you will necessarily need to make sacrifices at work and/or at home. This results in a deterioration of your job performance and strained relationships.
